A Maryland woman wanted in the 2021 murder of her boyfriend was arrested at the airport after returning from El Salvador.

Norma Elizabeth Rivas-Villacorta, 23, was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Washington Dulles International Airport on Sunday, according to a press release by the federal agency. Officials say the woman, who is from Riverdale, Maryland, had just arrived from El Salvador before he was arrested on charges of first- and second-degree murder.

While agents didn’t release details about the crimes Rivas-Villacorta allegedly committed, the Prince George’s County Police Department stated the charges stem from the domestic-related fatal shooting of 20-year-old Kayshaun Daly.

Rivas-Villacorta and Daly were allegedly in a romantic relationship when Daly was killed, though police continue to investigate the motive behind the murder.

On May 22, 2021, officials responded to reports of an unresponsive male at a residence on the 6700 block of Oakland Avenue at around 1:00 p.m., according to Prince George Police.

“Officers located the victim inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound,” police stated. “He was pronounced dead on the scene.”

Authorities say Rivas-Villcorta fled the country days after her boyfriend was found dead.

In September, Prince George detectives obtained a warrant for Rivas-Villcorta’s arrest.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials arrested her at the arrival gate shortly after she disembarked from her flight. It’s not immediately clear if Rivas-Villacorta had been in El Salvador for the entirety of the 12 months since Daly’s death.

F.B.I. agents and local police were also on hand when the suspect was placed under arrest. She was then handed over to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police.

“This arrest illustrates how Customs and Border Protection’s border security mission helps our law enforcement partners capture dangerous wanted persons and return them to face their charges,” stated Daniel Escobedo, who serves as Washington D.C.’s area port director for the agency.

Federal agents reminded the public that criminal charges are only allegations and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Rivas-Villacorta is currently being held at the Loudin County Adult Detention Center in Virginia, where she awaits extradition back to Prince George County, Maryland.
