CHS golf team qualifies for state

HESSTON — Senior Braxton Kindel and junior Aden Plymesser posted career best scores in leading the Concordia High School golf team to a second-place finish in the Class 4A regional tournament hosted by Buhler High School Monday at Hesston Golf Club.
Concordia recorded a four-man score of 344 to place second and qualify for the state tournament, to be played next Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton.
It will be Concordia's first trip to the state tournament as a full team since 2008.
McPherson won the regional tournament with a score of 319. Clay Center and Pratt tied for third place at 347.
Clay Center was awarded third place based on a lower score by its fifth man.
The top three teams and the top five individuals not on one of those teams qualify for state.
Kindel shot a 38 on the front nine and a 41 on the back to finish with a 79. He tied with Carson Floersch, Clay Center, and Grant McAtee, Pratt, for fourth place.
Based on a scorecard playoff, Floersch finished fourth, McAtee was fifth and Kindel was sixth.
Plymesser followed up a 40 on the front nine with a 42 on the back to post an 82. He tied with Blaise Hoover, McPherson, for ninth place and finished 10th based on a scorecard playoff.
“Without those two low scores, we don't go (to state),” Concordia coach Steven Nelson said. “And that is how it has been all season, really. We will have one or two guys shoot a good score and that kind of pulls the team along. It would be fun once to see them all play as well as they can.”
Senior Hayden Dvorak shot a 90 in the regional tournament.
Freshman Luke Donovan rounded out the top four for the Panthers with a 93.
Junior Keegan Hamel shot a 94 for Concordia and sophomore Lewis VanMeter carded a 97.
Gus Ruddle, McPherson, shot a one-over par 71 to earn medalist honors.
