BARABOO, Wis. — If you’re in an emergency situation in Sauk County, you now have a new way to get in contact with first responders.
Sauk County is now offering text-to-911 services, officials announced Wednesday. While a call to 911 is still preferred, those who can’t make a call because of their situation can send a text instead.
The message is sent like any other text. Simply type 911, with no spaces or dashes, into the “send to” field. Your first message should include your location and type of emergency. A dispatcher will then respond with questions and instructions. However, you cannot send photos, videos, emojis or links to dispatchers using the service.
The county can process messages from most major cell service carriers. If you are texting from a non-supported carrier, or you are outside the coverage area, you will receive a message saying the service is unavailable and to call 911 instead.
