OPAS Lounge Series delights

Attending most Oconee Performing Arts Society(OPAS) events is a high point on the cultural calendar of the lake country audience. But with the debut of the OPAS Lounge Series, the organization accomplished something that few could imagine. Audience members were stunned upon entering Festival Hall. Sightlines were bettered, capacity was increased, and Greensboro was transported to a 1920's Lounge.

The lush velvet tablecloths and intimate setting created a remarkable ambiance of elegance and sophistication. Patrons sipped wine and signature cocktails while listening to the fantastic entertainment.

The debut artist was none other than Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell. Russell toured for years with Steely Dan and David Bowie and only began her remarkable recording career at age 50. Her last two albums were Grammy-nominated, and her Grammy win was for her work on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.

Her well-curated set included rare songs and familiar ditties from the Great American Song Book and the early days of the jazz era. Artistic Director Doug LaBrecque accurately introduced Miss Russell as "the real deal." Music poured out of her soul with her pitch-perfect vocals. Miss Russell brought three world-class musicians from New York City to accompany her memorable performance.

Harbor Club resident Joy Holland said, "Another spectacular OPAS evening, wow!"

Long-time area resident Bo Fears said, "What OPAS did at Festival Hall was brilliant."

OPAS is recognized for its high level of concert presentations and its growing arts education initiatives, and a night like this was not to be missed. When you see an OPAS event advertised, you must GO….you will be glad that you did.
