VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and community leaders celebrated the reopening of the newly renovated visitor center at the Mel Rieman Recreation Area, as well as the site’s 70th anniversary of the opening of Baldhill dam on Wednesday, May 18th.

Col. Karl Jansen, commander of the St. Paul district said this structure has provided a water supply, recreation and flood control for Valley City and the surrounding area.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) lead natural resources specialist Scott Tichy said “we’re excited to celebrate the anniversary of Baldhill Dam and the newly renovated visitor center.”

Back in 1944, Congress authorized the funds to construct a water control structure northwest of Valley City, ND. The work on Baldhill Dam started in 1950 and was dedicated in 1952.
