Update: 6/10/2022

Palace Bar owner Brian Noel has decided not to renew the liquor license which expires at the end of this month.  Noel said to CBS3: " The way that everything went, I think it’s for the best." Noel went on to say with all the back and forth with the police he plans to sell.

Apparently, he already has someone to buy the bar but nothing is official just yet. He went on to say that he is pretty sure they will keep the same staff but will have to apply for a new liquor license. If the bar is sold it will be interesting to see if the new owners will be able to get a liquor license given the history of the bar and calls to the police.

Superior Police Chief Nicholas Alexander has asked the Superior City Council not to renew the Liquor License for Palace Bar at 1108 Tower Avenue in Superior. The reason for the request is due to more than 150 calls to the police since January 2021. The calls were regarding fights, battery, and a weapons violation that occurred on March 18.

On top of those incidents of more than 100 bar checks by the police also revealed five liquor law violations. The reason for the nonrenewal of the bar's liquor license is based on a Wisconsin law about maintaining a “disorderly or riotous, indecent or improper house,”

The Superior Telegram (Paywall) reported that Alexander wrote:

The establishment known as the Palace Bar has been the source of repeated, continuous and ongoing calls for police service for incidents involving drunkenness and violence in recent months. Just since April of 2021, the city’s police department has documented numerous incidents of physical confrontation at the Palace Bar, including several one-on-one and large group fights that have occurred both within the bar and/or have spilled out onto the bar’s parking lot. Several people involved in the incidents of violence were proven to be underage.

The March 18 altercation involved two people drawing a firearm and one person discharging the weapon toward a group of people trying to get out of the bar. It's legal to have a firearm in a tavern, but the person with the firearm is not allowed to consume any alcohol.

Alexander continued to say: "I believe that the establishment known as the Palace Bar constitutes a ‘disorderly or riotous, indecent or improper house’ that threatens public health and safety, as well as enjoyment of the surrounding neighborhood."

The Superior City Council will be meeting on June 7 at 6:30 pm in room 201 of The Government Center to consider the nonrenewal of Palace Bars Liquor license.
