PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — The Pensacola International Airport and its employees helped a woman who gave birth to a baby mid-flight earlier this year.

According to WJCL, a Frontier flight was on its way to Orlando from Denver when a pregnant woman unexpectedly went into labor. A flight attendant took the mother into the back lavatory and helped her deliver the baby.

Pensacola International Airport, which was nearby, received a call around 4:30 a.m. for a medical diversion.

"Receiving a call for a medical diversion isn’t unusual for our dispatchers, but at 4:30 in the morning, critical airline personnel haven’t reported to work yet," Pensacola International Airport Director Matt Coughlin tells Channel 3 in a statement. "Within minutes of receiving a call that a Frontier Airlines flight with a woman in labor was diverting to Pensacola, Airport Operations Dispatcher Dave Covell had alerted emergency personnel and coordinated a ground crew to park the aircraft. His calm demeanor surely contributed to a successful outcome in this situation, despite having limited airline personnel."

After landing the plane early in Pensacola, officials took the mother to a local hospital.

The airline said the mom chose the middle name "Sky" for her newborn daughter.

"Pensacola International Airport is proud to have played a part in this happy moment," Coughlin said in his statement.
