Graduates: remember some things in next step

No matter which path you take after graduation, here are a few suggestions.

It may sound redundant to say “Congratulations” to our many graduates out there—to those who are leaving high schools and colleges. Just because you’ve heard it a lot lately, doesn’t mean “Congratulations” this time has any less meaning.
Chase County Schools just said farewell to 46 members of the 2022 senior class, while 19 seniors at Wauneta-Palisade will also move on to new endeavors. To those 65 young adults—some of us envy the adventures before you.
Whether you are pursuing post-secondary education, going into the workforce or have enlisted with the military, you all have exciting opportunities ahead.
Those of us who have lived a few years can look back on our high school and college graduations and can easily make some suggestions for the Class of 2022 as they move on, like these:
Remember your roots. Southwest Nebraska is a great place to call home. I grew up in Omaha, and of course had great family support, but here it feels like the entire community is family. The majority of people here really care about you and your future.
Keep in touch with your family. For those leaving here for college, employment or military service, you’re going to make new friends and new experiences await you. Don’t forget your family back home. It’s important to stay in touch with an actual phone call. And, remember hand-written letters?
Physical health is important. Eating smart, maintaining hydration and exercise are always important to good health and living well. You’ll have a lot of distractions to do otherwise.
It’s okay to be a bit scared. Embrace that and move forward anyway. Read “Thought for the Week” below.
And, don’t forget God. As you move on, especially if it’s to college, you’ll be making an effort to study and educate yourself for a future profession. Don’t forget the spiritual part of you—that takes constant attention and study, too.
Good luck to all the graduates as you head on to a new chapter in life!
