PITTSBURGH — The victim in this case is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot several times during a night out with his friends last summer.

In court Wednesday, the DA’s office showed a lot of video evidence capturing the shooting and the events leading up to it, which helped them make an arrest.

This man’s life was changed forever on July 31, 2021, when he was shot eight times in the Giant Eagle parking lot on the Southside and it was all caught on camera.

“The shooting is captured on video but it’s from a distance and you can’t really make an identification but with all the other videos, you are able to track the shooter all the way through the South Side until he gets to the BP station where there’s high-definition video clear as day of the shooter’s face,” said Ilan Zur, the deputy district attorney.

The district attorney’s office shared this surveillance video during Wednesday’s preliminary hearing. They said cameras in the area helped them identify the shooter as Randy Jones.

In court, the victim testified he went out with some friends that night and when they got back to their car in the Giant Eagle parking lot, he noticed a man and woman arguing and stepped in to help the woman.

“That’s the sad thing about it. He was minding his own business for the most part until he saw the situation between a male and female getting into an argument which he was concerned about,” said Zur. “He wanted to help the female out, so he told the male don’t talk to a woman like that and as a result he got shot eight times.”

As a result, the victim is paralyzed from the waist down. He did not want to show his face on camera or be interviewed today.

The shooter, Randy Jones, remains in jail. His defense attorney had this to say about the video evidence.

‘It’s really difficult to tell, it was really grainy to me and blurry to me,” said defense attorney Albert Greg.

All charges were held for court including aggravated assault.
