New York’s Comptroller, Tom DiNapoli, toured Plattsburgh Wednesday to learn more about projects underway in the city.He says now is the time to make investments to welcome back tourists and to also better the quality of life for North Country residents.Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest showed off projects that need investment, projects he says are crucial for downtown revitalization initiatives like revamping Margaret Street. He also brought attention to projects like the Saranac River Trail and the Harborside Master Plan. “Just showing the comptroller what we’re doing. So he’s aware of it, so his office is aware of it. And other partners and state agencies and the state are aware of it. So that’s it. It's really crucial for us to keep that dialogue and keep that relationship,” Rosenquest said. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli says now that the city is off of the fiscal stress list, he is excited to look into ways the local economy can grow, especially with border restrictions loosened.“Each region of the state really needs to think about how we ensure this continued recovery and that means collaboration between government and business for this part of the state. the relationship with Canada. And it's good news that the Canadians are starting to come back,” DiNapoli said.The North Country Chamber of Commerce says investments in tourism are just as important as investments for residents. The Saranac River project would create recreational opportunities for people in the area.“You always want to build on the quality of life for your residents and by investing in outdoor recreation activities and different things like that, you’re giving your citizens, your residents, more to do in the area. It’s very family-friendly. We’re a family-friendly community,” said Kristy Kennedy with the chamber.DiNapoli says there’s a possibility some state funding could come to development projects throughout the area. “With any region, there’s probably never enough of it. You’d always like to see more. The state’s been in a much stronger position, because the economy is coming back, not as strong as we’d like, in benefit of the federal dollars that’ve been coming in. it’s a good time to really take the plans and the dreams and put them into reality. It’s a historic opportunity,” DiNapoli said.Inflation has caused the cost of doing business to go up, which means development projects could cost more in the bidding stages.
