16 to compete at state track

Throwers Lauren Herman, Correy Koellner to defend state titles

Sixteen Dragon tracksters will be representing Holyoke at the 2A state track and field championships Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21, at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

“I’m excited because we had a lot of events qualify,” said coach Corey Koberstein, noting that several qualified in individual events in addition to both girls and boys relays.

Girls and the events that they qualified in include:

— Lauren Herman: Shot put and discus.

Correy Koellner: Shot put, discus, long jump, sprint medley relay, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay.

— Tayla Martin: 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, sprint medley relay, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay.

— Linda Esser: Long jump, sprint medley relay, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay.

— Ava Koberstein: 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and sprint medley relay.

— Clover Adler: 4x200 relay.

Because athletes are limited to four events at state, the Lady Dragons have switched up the relay lineups. Relays competing at state will include:

— Sprint medley: Koellner, Martin, Esser and Koberstein.

— 4x100: Koellner, Martin, Esser and Koberstein.

— 4x200: Esser, Koberstein, Adler and Dahira Castillo.

— 4x400: Koberstein, Adler, Elyce Sisseck and Leah Struckmeyer.

State qualifying boys and the events they will be competing in include:

— Wyatt Sprague: 4x100 relay and 110 meter hurdles.

— Cash Weber: 4x100 relay and long jump.

— Bryson Dirks: Long jump and triple jump.

— Aidyn Shafer: Shot put.

Holyoke has a chance to build on the success of the 2021 state meet. Last year, Herman was the discus champion and was second in the shot put. Koellner took first in the shot put, second in the discus and ninth in the long jump. Martin was on the podium with an eighth-place finish in the 400 meter dash.

On the boys side, Shafer placed sixth in the shot put, and Max Kleve earned third in the 100 meter dash and eighth in the 200 meter dash.
