Tyson Fury is retired, he doesn’t need time says Eddie Hearn

By Charles Brun: Eddie Hearn jokingly says it’s not necessary for the WBC to give heavyweight champion Tyson Fury extra time to consider whether he wants to continue his career.

Hearn says Fury doesn’t need time because he’s retired from the sport following his win over Dillian Whyte on April 23rd.

However, Hearn believes Fury has no intention of retiring now, and he’s hoping he’ll return to the ring to face the winner of the July 23rd rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.

If Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) is serious about his retirement talk, it would be one less big name. The top stars are dropping like flies from boxing after making tons of money and losing their ambition to continue fighting.

In Fury’s case, it’s not all that surprising that he’s chosen to walk away. He’s always been one to enjoy his money in between fights, letting his weight spiral out of control. We saw Fury disappear for three years after his win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

It was clear even back then that Fury’s love for the sport wasn’t enough to keep him working at his professional like the more driven competitors.

Given the way that Fury lets his health decline with his eating & drinking habits, he’s arguably better off staying in the sport for as long as possible to save him from his unhealthy tendencies.

Amir Khan and Kell Brook are two recent stars that have chosen to retire after making their millions, and it won’t be surprising if Anthony Joshua, Canelo Alvarez & Gennadiy Golovkin will be the next two big names to hang up their gloves after becoming fabulously rich.

“I don’t know why he needs time? He’s retired,” said Eddie Hearn to Boxing Social when asked about his thoughts on the WBC, giving Tyson Fury more time to decide if he’ll continue his career or not.

If Fury is retiring, he needs to turn in his WBC strap back to the World Boxing Organization headquarters because he’s slowing down the careers of the contenders waiting in line for their chance to fight for a world title to make life-changing money.

These three contenders in the WBC’s rankings are waiting for their chance to fight for the vacant belt: Frank Sanchez, Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker. If Fury is going to hang up his gloves, he needs to do it already and stop talking about it.

“We all know he’s not retiring,” said Hearn about Fury. “He won’t vacate the [WBC] belt, and I hope he fights the winner of Joshua vs. Usyk. That’s a tremendous fight for his career.

“I signed his contract this morning for his fight,” said Hearn about heavyweight Derek Chisora.

“We hope to get his opponent to sign his contract tonight, and you will get an announcement in the next few days on Derek Chisora’s next fight. It’s a fantastic fight in London, and I can’t wait,” said Hearn without giving any hints about who Chisora could be fighting next.
