CRESTVIEW, Fla. -- A Crestview man who murdered his elderly neighbor in 2018 at the age of 17 was sentenced to 40 years in prison Wednesday.
Jeremiah Murphy, 21, took a plea to the May 26, 2018, murder of 69-year-old Nancy Williams. He previously faced a life sentence.
Williams was reported missing by her mother two days after she was killed, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy tried to make contact with Williams at her home on the 4100 block of Painter Branch Road. All the doors were locked and no one was around, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office then discovered Williams' body with gunshot wounds in the detached garage near the home.
After further investigation, Murphy was named a suspect in the murder.
Murphy told deputies that he and one other person went into the home to commit a burglary. Murphy added the other person was the shooter.
Investigators eventually determined that Murphy was the shooter, where he then was charged with felony murder.
Investigators say Murphy used to date the victim's granddaughter and had been to the home several times before.
Since Murphy was a teen at the time of the incident, his sentence can be reviewed at 25 years. That does not mean his sentence will be reduced.
