UPDATE: Suspected gunman dead, woman and baby shot inside Plaza Azteca

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Fargo Police have now identified the man suspected of shooting a woman and an 8-month-old baby, before killing himself, as Malik Lamar Gill, 24, from Moorhead.

Police say the shooting happened at the Plaza Azteca restaurant at 5505 28th Ave. S. just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18.

Witnesses say Gill shot the the 21-year-old female victim with a handgun multiple times both inside and outside the restaurant. Witnesses say there wasn’t a confrontation, but say the woman was ‘very anxious’ while eating and sitting next to Gill. At this time, both police and witnesses say it’s unclear what lead to the shooting.

Witnesses say the woman was holding her baby and ran through the restaurant trying to get away from Gill. Plaza staff say the woman found herself inside the kitchen and staff were trying to help her, but staff say that’s when they saw Gill re-load his gun. Staff say they ran out the emergency exit door to the back parking lot and the woman and her child followed where the gunshots continued.

One witness says she also ran out the emergency exit and was hiding behind a van when she watched Gill cock the gun back and fired one last time toward the woman and her child. The witness says the woman laid on top of her baby to protect it, and Gill ran off.

“I will never forget this or the images of today,” the witness said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, police state the female was in critical-stable condition at a local healthcare facility with gunshots wounds above her waist. The infant is in stable condition with gunshot injuries to the left hand and thigh. Police say none of the other patrons or staff members were injured in the incident.

“I hope that the two victims will be ok and I hope they’re going to successfully recover from their injuries,” said Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting.

A short time after the call for the shooting, police got a report of a stolen vehicle in the 4100 block of 66th St. S. Authorities located the suspect’s vehicle at that address and sent the description of the stolen vehicle to other law enforcement agencies in the area.

Around 3:30 p.m., Clay County were able to find Gill who authorities say led them on a high-speed chase with speeds over 80 mph. Sheriff Empting said deputies used OnStar tracking to follow the vehicle, and used stop sticks to flatten the tires on the stolen vehicle Gill was driving.

Gill crashed and drove into a grove of trees near Silver Lake, Minn., where the SWAT team was called out to ensure the incident ended peacefully and as safely as possible.

Empting stated once there was no longer movement in the vehicle, they sent out a drone to check on Gill. Empting said officers soon determined Gill was dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This isn’t Gill’s first run in with the law, according to court records, Gill’s criminal record in the area dates back to 2016, when he was 18 years old.
