The Americanism Essay Contest started in December 2021. The theme this year was, “What does it mean to love your country?” Contest rules and guidelines were given to teachers of all five Washington County schools. Locally, three essays were selected in each division: Division I (5th and 6th graders) and Division II (7th and 8th graders). The essays were then sent to the district level, where they competed against students from Boulder, Brighton, Fort Collins, Fort Morgan, Longmont, Loveland, Sterling and Wray. At districts, they are placed 1st through 3rd, with 1st place moving on to the state competition.

Once again, Washington County did very well, as four of the six placed at districts and two went on to state. Akron sixth grader, Elijah Hart, placed 1st in Division I and received $100. Division II winners were 1st place – Tessa Lingo-Smith, Lone Star seventh grader and recipient of $100; 2nd place – Raya Routh, Otis seventh grader and recipient of $75; and 3rd place – Anderson Weathers, Lone Star eighth grader and recipient of $50.
