COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continued to rise in the latest data update from the Iowa Department of Public Health and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released today.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Iowa rose to 145, making this the fourth straight week with more COVID patients in the state's hospitals. Of those, 19 patients required intensive care for COVID complications, according to the health and human services department.

There were also 17 more COVID-19 deaths this week, shortly after the U.S. as a whole reached one-million deaths. Iowa's pandemic death toll now stands at 9,571.

As of today, Iowans can vote in this spring's Republican or Democratic primary elections for U.S. Senate and other federal, state and local races.

Iowa’s early voting period now begins 20 days before Primary Election Day. For this year's primary elections, that is today.

And today county auditors start mailing absentee ballots to voters who requested them. You can still request one for the June 7 primary, but you must declare a party and have your application into your county auditor’s office by May 23.

Early in-person voting continues until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6. If you are voting in person, be sure to bring your approved voter ID, such as an Iowa driver’s license.
