East Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse man fled the scene of a fender bender, which led to a car chase and a crash with another vehicle which caused that vehicle to slam into a house in East Syracuse.
The incident began Tuesday morning at the intersection of Thompson Road and Exeter Street, according to a news release from DeWitt police Wednesday. Anthony M. Wright, 28, was driving a sedan and rear-ended Richard U. Shepard, 68, in the intersection, police said.
The two men had a short exchange before Wright fled the scene in his car, police said. Shepard chased him in his car in an attempt to stop him, they said. Police had not been called at this point.
The chase continued on toward East Irving Street and Hartwell Avenue where Wright failed to stop at a stop sign, police said. Wright’s car struck an SUV that was traveling north on Hartwell Avenue.
The collision forced the SUV to crash into a house at 500 Hartwell Ave., police said.
The driver of the SUV had to be extricated and was rushed to the hospital, they said. The driver suffered serious head and lower body injuries.
Wright suffered minor injuries to his face and was brought to the hospital for his injuries and his apparent impairment, police said.
Shepard was uninjured and was charged with reckless driving, they said.
Wright was arrested and charged with the following:
- Felony driving while intoxicated
- First-degree aggravated unlicensed operation
- Reckless driving
- Operating without an ignition interlock device
- Open container
- Multiple vehicles and traffic moving violations
