After a Danville man was shot and killed last month, a grand jury convened to decide if the triggerman should face charges.
Shafi Yassin Rasheed, 20, was shot in the 600 block of Edmonds Street, outside of the Cardinal Village apartment complex, on Saturday, April 16. He later died at SOVAH Danville.
A 21-year-old man not from Danville called 911 to report the shooting, claiming self-defense.
After reviewing surveillance video and collecting witness statements, the investigation found Rasheed instigated the altercation that ultimately led to his shooting, Danville police said at the time.
Investigators said Rasheed approached the second male carrying a firearm, upset about a female acquaintance.
Police said Rasheed assaulted the second man with a firearm, and the second male produced a gun of his own and Rasheed was shot multiple times.
The Danville Commonwealth's Attorney's Office determined charges weren't warranted at the time but said the case would be turned over to a grand jury to review the incident.
During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, the Danville Commonwealth's Attorney showed a video of the altercation that led to the shooting.
According to the video, Rasheed punched into the other man's vehicle with a gun multiple times, losing his gun in the vehicle.
The female acquaintance grabbed Rasheed's gun and left the vehicle, the Danville Commonwealth's Attorney said.
Video then shows Rasheed arguing with the female acquaintance, demanding his gun back, according to witness statements.
The 21-year-old man then got out of his vehicle, unsure if Rasheed had his gun back, and fired at Rasheed three times with his own firearm, according to the Danville Commonwealth's Attorney.
Rasheed was struck three times and fell to the ground, which is when the female acquaintance fled into a nearby residence and the 21-year-old man fled the scene, according to the video.
A grand jury was presented evidence and the video by the Danville Commonwealth's Attorney and declined to move forward with manslaughter charges against the man who shot Rasheed.
Quimmah Rasheed, Shafi's mother, has called on authorities to charge someone in her son's death.
"I just want them to know he was somebody's son and he was well-loved and he was a good person," she said.
