Liberty rising senior Matt Vital recorded eight birdies during a tournament-record, 7-under-par 65 on Sunday to win the Philadelphia junior golf tournament at Penn State’s Blue Course.

The Bethlehem resident shot a 72 in Saturday’s first round before Sunday’s stellar round to win by two shots over Shavertown’s Michael Lugiano.

Moravian Academy’s Evan Eichenlaub was third at 2-under.

The 16-year-old Vital had birdies Sunday on Nos. 1, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 to catch Lugiano, who shot a first-round 67 before posting four bogeys on the front side Sunday. Lugiano had four birdies on the back nine to stay in contention.

Vital had five birdies during Saturday’s first round.

Michael Vital, Matt’s brother, finished tied for 13th with rounds of 76-76.
