Lawrence police identify victims of double fatal road rage shooting

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) - The two victims of a double-fatal road rage shooting in the parking lot of the Lawrence Hy-Vee have been identified.

The Lawrence Police Department says detectives continue to investigate the deaths of two men who were shot in the Hy-Vee parking lot on Tuesday evening.

LPD said the two victims of the shooting have been identified as Zachary Michael Sutton, 22, and Monty Ray Amick, 53, both of Lawrence.

Detectives said they believe the initial interaction between the two victims happened near 23rd St. and Harper. They said both vehicles traveled west on 23rd where a confrontation occurred near 23rd and Iowa.

Chief Rich Lockhart said Amick had made a demeaning comment about the Ford’s loud exhaust pipe. He said the drivers then continued to exchange words until they reached the Hy-Vee parking lot. Lockhart said Sutton and Amick confronted one another in the store parking lot and eventually exchanged gunfire.

correction: 13 NEWS originally reported that Chief Lockhart stated Sutton shot first, however, that information was not disclosed during the news conference.

Sutton was pronounced dead at the scene and Amick was rushed to a hospital in Overland Park where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Detectives believe Sutton was a passenger in a 2006 White Ford F-150 and Amick was the driver and sole occupant of a 2007 Blue Nissan Xterra.

Lockhart indicated the drivers were unknown to each other. However, he did mention there were two other occupants in the Ford who had witnessed the altercation. Neither of the other occupants have been considered as suspects.

“This is still a tragic event that happened and one that was very preventable,” said Chief Lockhart. “This is probably the most ridiculous thing that I’ve ever heard of for people to be killed over is the pipes on your car.”

LPD said if anyone saw the alteration at 23rd and Iowa or the shooting at Hy-Vee, they should call the Investigations Unit at 785-830-7430.
