FREMONT — Interim Police Chief Derek Wensinger said a suspect has been identified in the May 5 Rojas Rosas Cantina shooting through video footage provided by the establishment.

"The suspect has fled. We do not anticipate any problems in the area," Wensinger said Tuesday.

Two males were shot inside at the bar area of the restaurant, 531 W. State St., at approximately 10:10 p.m. on May 5, the police said in a news release after the incident.

The victims were taken to area hospitals and treated for their injuries.

Wensinger said the police department did not plan to release the suspect's name, or the name of a suspect in a separate March 12 fatal stabbing on Justice Street, until formal indictments are filed with a grand jury.

Both cases are still under investigation.

The interim police chief said he expected the formal indictments and criminal charges to be filed soon, although he did not have an exact date for those filings.

Wensinger said the police had received a lot of cooperation from the restaurant, adding he was disappointed anyone would enter a restaurant or business and fire a gun.

In the March 12 fatal stabbing incident, Marrio Dean, 43, of Fremont, died.

He was found in the street and taken to ProMedica Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Police originally thought Dean had been shot, not stabbed.

When officers initially arrived on the scene, they responded to a shots fired call and it was believed Dean had been shot multiple times.
