A local man got plenty of attention from Atmore police when he came to APD headquarters and reported his vehicle missing. It just wasn’t the attention he had hoped for.
Sgt. Darrell McMann reported that around 12:45 p.m. on May 7, Damien Deandre Cole, 31, “came to the Atmore Police Department requesting assistance in locating his vehicle.”
Reports show that after discussing the situation, the reporting officer determined that the issue was actually a civil matter. Meanwhile, the policeman discovered that Cole was the subject of an outstanding felony arrest warrant. (Cole has been arrested 10 times since 2011, mostly on drug charges, according to Escambia County Detention Center records.)
When the officer notified Cole that he was under arrest for the warrant, he (Cole) attempted to run from the APD lobby but was arrested after a brief struggle.
While searching Cole for weapons, officers discovered several small bags of methamphetamine, several small bags of spice and some undisclosed drug paraphernalia on his person.
Cole was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude officers.
He was processed into the county jail, where an employee of the booking and release division reported he remained late Monday, May 16, under a bond of $50,000.
