Graduating Chester County High School senior Emmy Melton earned the opportunity to continue her cheer career at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Recently, Melton participated in the UT Martin Skyhawks Cheer Squad tryouts. After the three-day process of fight song, cheers, tumbling, jumps and stunts, Melton earned a spot on the Skyhawks Cheer Squad.
“It was a very nerve racking experience since I hadn’t tried out for cheer since my freshman year. I was nervous but also very excited at the same time,” Melton said.
Her Cheer coaches Starla Teague and Diane Stewart knew she had the ability to cheer at the college level since she was a freshman at Chester County.
“I knew from her freshman year that Emmy had the skills and determination to cheer at the college level. She has trained so hard to master the advanced stunt and tumbling skills to prepare her for this moment. She is proof that hard work pays off. I am confident she will be just as impressive of a UTM Skyhawk as she was a CCHS Eagle,” Teague said.
“This girl was born to cheer and UT Martin is fortunate to have her on their sidelines,” Stewart said.
That being said, they mentioned they will miss having her on the CCHS Cheer Squad.
”I will miss the energy and enthusiasm Emmy brought to our cheer squad,” Stewart said.
“We are so proud of her and will sure miss her this upcoming season, but we will always be cheering her on from here,” Teague said.
There are some memories Melton will treasure from the CCHS Cheer Squad like winning the Leadership Award at cheer camp in the summer of 2021. That year, CCHS also brought home all Blue Ribbon evaluations each day, Large Varsity Division during the final day’s competition: First Place in Cheer, First Place in Camp Routine, Second Place in Overall Game Day, Third Place in Sideline Cheer
“It was such an honor for other schools to view us as an example,” she said.
Now that she has graduated from high school, she is entering what she called her life-long dream.
”Being able to continue my passion of being a cheerleader is so surreal! It’s been my dream to become a college cheerleader since I was little,” she said.
Now she said that she has her eyes set to one day be a Tennessee Titan cheerleader.
