CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - The southeast Missouri affiliate of Habitat for Humanity celebrated its 35th anniversary.

An anniversary luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 18 at Century Casino.

Approximately 60 people, including community supporters, business partners, Habitat homeowners and volunteers attended the event.

“They put in sweat with their hours. They have built a home. They’re making off with mortgage payments just like any other American who owns a mortgage. They have to pay for the upkeep, it’s part of it,” John Gary, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, said. “Habitat is about a hand-up instead of a handout. So, yes, they put the time in to make this a reality for them.”

According to Habitat for Humanity - Cape Area, they have built 62 homes across Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Perryville and Marble Hill over the last 35 years.
