Maher-Boulis Named MAA-SE Chair

Faculty, Mathematical Sciences, News

Dr. Caroline Maher-Boulis, professor of mathematics at Lee, was recently named chair-elect of the Mathematical Association of America Southeastern Section (MAA-SE) by its nominating committee.

The decision is made by the MAA-SE’s Executive Committee in their spring business meeting, which occurred this year at Berry College in March. Chair-elect carries a four-year commitment, one year as chair-elect, two as chair, and an additional year of service as immediate past-chair.

“It is humbling to be nominated and chosen for this position,” said Maher-Boulis. “The MAA-SE is one of the largest regional sections in the Mathematical Association of America. The officers of the Executive Committee are extremely dedicated people, and it will be such an honor to serve the mathematical community along with them.”

The chair-elect serves on the Executive Committee and presides at meetings in the absence of the chair or immediate past-chair. The chair provides leadership for the programs of the Section, sets the agenda, and presides at each business meeting of the membership, at special meetings of the Section, and at each meeting of the Executive Committee. Each fall, the chair convenes a meeting of the Executive Committee and annual meeting planners. The chair also appoints the committees of the Section, designates the chair of each committee, and is a member ex officio of each committee. The chair also attends the meeting of Section officers at the national MAA Conference, MathFest. The immediate past-chair serves on the Executive Committee and presides at meetings in the absence of the chair.

“I am confident that Dr. Maher-Boulis will use the many gifts and talents she has shown as a faculty member at Lee to help the Southeastern Section of the MAA continue to grow into one of the finest sections in the nation,” said Dr. Blayne Carroll, chair of the department of mathematical sciences. “They have made an excellent choice by electing her as their next chair.”

Maher-Boulis has been a member of the MAA-SE for 17 years. She has organized contributed-paper sessions and panel discussions for the annual spring Section Meeting, and she was the organizer for the Section Meeting which Lee hosted in 2019. She has also organized sessions on non-academic career options for mathematics majors and sessions on solving problems from businesses, industries, and government agencies.

The MAA-SE advances the mathematical sciences within the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee by considering mathematical professionals at all levels in the design of its program and activities, with a special emphasis on the collegiate level.
