Imagine if you were in an accident and unable to speak with first responders about your health condition -- or that of your child’s.
The Marshall County Health Department, along with the Moundsville Rotary, have teamed up to create a Medical Seat Belt Safety Day, where seatbelt covers with important medical information can be made.
"The first responders need to know as much information about that person as we can, so if they are in a wreck or something like that, they'll be able to see these seat belt covers on the car and be able to get information for the individual," Marshall County Threat Preparedness Director Mark Ackermann said.
How it works is you start with a seat belt cover of your choice that will include warning label on the front, then, on the inside is a card, your medical information – plus any medications you are on -- will be held for first responders.
The idea came from a mother in Jackson County who had an autistic son during a medical episode in a car.
"They had a young kid who was a runner, and when mom ended up getting sick, they had to make a chase on this gentleman a couple times," Ackermann said.
One thing is important to keep in mind when using one of these covers in your car.
"Take it with them when they are going to a different vehicle, don’t leave it behind for somebody else to sit there giving wrong information," Ackermann said.
The covers come in all types of colors, shapes, and sizes.
If you were unable to attend the Medical Seat Belt event, you can call the health department and officials there can help.
