SAGINAW COUNTY (WWJ) - Police said they're investigating the events that led up to a vehicle crash that killed two cows in Saginaw County late Tuesday night.

Thomas Township Police said they received reports of dead cattle on the road with other livestock running lose off of Gratiot Road near M-46 just after 10 p.m. on May 17.

When police arrived on scene, officers found evidence of a vehicle collision and two dead adult cows on the road.

"The officer observed one dead cow on the shoulder and another dead cow laying in the grassy area," Thomas Township Police Chief Al Fong said to WWJ Newsradio 950's Johnathan Carlson.

Authorities said the cows appeared to have escaped from a farm in Thomas Township and were wandering in the area. The livestock's owners were contacted and the remaining cattle were towed back to their property, roughly a quarter of a mile away from the crash site.

"Upon further investigation, they located a vehicle that was involved in the crash without the driver," Fong said.

Police were able to find the owner of the vehicle, but it remains unclear who was driving and why they left the scene of the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Thomas Township Police at 989-781-1300.
