G-E-T girls repeat as Coulee Conference champs

The Coulee Conference championship track and field meet last Saturday could very well have been called the Trempealeau County championship — the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau girls easily repeated as conference champions and G-E-T senior Will Thompson took home four individual titles to lead the boys to second place.

Arcadia worked its way to seven titles as well, winning two on the girls’ side and five from the boys at Westby High School. The Raiders took third as a team in the boys’ side and fourth in the girls’ competition.

Both teams were set to compete Monday in Arcadia before continuing with an invitational in Whitehall on Thursday.

Sophomore Kaylee Hauge took home three individual titles, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. Quinn Wenthe also had a pair, winning the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. Sophomore Adrianna Rotering (1,600) and senior Tauna Janssen (800) joined senior Kylie Schmitz (discus) as champions, too.

The Red Hawks got wins out of multiple relay teams, led by the 400 relay team of Alayna Stendahl, Jordan Stanislowski, Kayli Bratberg and Grace Shanley; 1,600-meter relay team of Avali Bratberg, Schmitz, Emily Nelson and Janssen; and 3,200-meter relay team of Nelson, Avali Bratberg, Janssen and Aleah Hunter.

They added five second-place finishes and one third place as well.

Second place Westby came in with 160.5 points, well behind G-E-T with 193. Arcadia took fourth with 54.5, also behind West Salem in third at 132.

Thompson had himself a day, winning the 110 hurdles before sweeping the jumping field events by winning the long, triple and high jump. The 3,200-relay team of Lance Jumbeck, Charlie Caya, Xander Burmeister and Carter Gold also finished in first, winning by more than six seconds.

Three Red Hawks had runner-up finishes, and Sam Ruiter took third in the mile. West Salem won the team title on the boys’ side, edging G-E-T 129-120. Arcadia came in third with 113 points.

Arcadia sophomore Casidi Pehler continued her strong stretch in the pole vault, winning a conference title with a leap of 10 feet, six inches. Junior teammate Tegan Michalak also won an individual crown, outpacing Rotering by 20 seconds to take the 3,200 race.

The Raiders got second in the 1,600-meter relay thanks to Jacy Boberg, Kianna Suchla, Sky Reit and Josee Pehler–who also combined to take third in the 800-meter relay–while adding third place finishes in the 1,600 (Michalak) and 300-meter hurdles (Suchla).

Ryan Sokup (100, 200) and Jose Monroy (800, 1,600) each added a pair of individual championships to their résumés, and the Arcadia boys rounded out the top three teams on Saturday.

Joe Nelson won the 400-meter run for the Raiders, which also got second place finishes from Monroy (3,200) and Drew Teske (300 hurdles). Teske added a third place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.
