The driver of a 2006 GMC Savana was speeding when he slammed into a Ford van waiting at a red light at the intersection of Opitz Boulevard and Telegraph Road at around 1 p.m., Prince William County police said.

The impact pushed the second vehicle into a Toyota van that was also waiting at the light.

Mitchell Shaffer, 62, a passenger in the speeding car, died at the scene, police said.

The driver, a 58-year-old Woodbridge man, was seriously wounded. Paramedics airlifted him to an area hospital for treatment, and he is expected to survive, police said. The other drivers, a 36-year-old Stafford man and a 41-year-old woman from Fairfax Station, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.

Police said charges are pending.

Investigators ask anyone who saw the wreck or has any information to contact the Prince William County Police Department tip line at 703-792-7000.
