Comedian and actor Michael Ian Black coming to the Music Hall Lounge; more shows announced

Comedian and actor Michael Ian Black will perform two stand-up shows at the new Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth on Saturday, July 9.

PORTSMOUTH - The Music Hall has announced another round of shows coming to its newly renovated venue, The Music Hall Lounge, including two shows by comedian and actor Michael Ian Black.

A multi-media artist, Black has starred in numerous films and TV series including "Wet Hot American Summer" and travels the country doing stand-up comedy. He will perform two shows on Saturday, July 9.

Formerly named The Loft, The Lounge will feature local performing artists, award-winning bands, best-selling authors and stand-up comedians in the new nightclub-style venue with flexible, cabaret-style seating, bar and food service, and a brand new sound system. A grand opening weekend is planned for July 7-10.  

Tickets are on sale now for the venue's first 17 shows at themusichall.org or by calling (603) 436-2400. More shows will be announced in coming weeks.

On Thursday, July 21, Chris Pierce, the No. 1 charting singer-songwriter who has toured with Seal, Cold War Kids, Keb' Mo', Sunny War and more, in addition to topping the Billboard Blues chart and Americana lists, will perform, the Music Hall announced.

The Seacoast's own Taylor O’Donnell will perform on Sunday, July 24. Known for her exploratory use of vocal timbre and texture in her musical stylings, O’Donnell’s musical dialogue combines her R&B, folk, jazz, rock, and classical music training.

On Friday, Aug. 19, EANDA Band will perform. The best of the best in Boston’s American string scene, EANDA Band members Darol Anger, Courtney Hartman, Joe Walsh, Lukas Pool, and Sharon Gilchrist create a spirited musical conversation that’s sparky, informal, and emotional all in one.

A truly original new voice in songwriting, Bella White creates an undeniable magic on her debut album that Rolling Stone praised as “sublime Appalachian heartbreak.” White will perform Saturday, Aug. 20.

Award-winning recording artist Will Dailey will perform Friday, Sept. 2. His sound has been described as a venn diagram of multiple genres with a rich vintage vibe channeled through his authentic and energetic performances. 

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ari Hest will perform Thursday, Sept. 15. His deep, smooth voice is seriously easy to fall into, making his songs perfect for TV, film, and collaborations with the likes of Judy Collins and Chrissi Poland. 

Folk and pop singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke will perform Saturday, Oct. 8. Merging evocative folk and melodic pop, she's spent decades songwriting for Disney films and television shows, as well as her own releases.

Ellis Paul will perform on Friday, Oct. 28. A national treasure and New England’s own, Paul is a singular storyteller, a musician whose words reach out from inside for all to hear.

Shows announced earlier include comedian Pat McGann doing two shows on Thursday, July 7 and a Darlingside concert on July 8, which has already sold out. 

Author Tom Perrotta will speak about his new book, "Tracy Flick Can't Win," on Tuesday, July 12. Founder of the iconic band, Great Big Sea, Séan McCann presents his rollicking new album on Wednesday, July 13

Local favorite Bitter Pill brings its dark and anachronistic twist of folk, blues, jazz, rockabilly, and country to the Lounge on Friday, July 22. Singer-songwriter veterans Peter Mulvey & Mark Erelli on Thursday, July 28 will be followed by Takénobu who will perform on Saturday, July 30. 

Comedian Adam Ray of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development and The Heat fame will perform Sunday, Aug. 7.
