May is Mental Health Awareness Month. “Mental Health America” is bringing it back to the basics. Mental Health is entering more mainstream conversations, it’s critical that solid foundations of knowledge are formed.
There’s often no one single cause for a mental health condition. Instead, there are many possible risk factors that can influence how likely a person is to experience a mental health condition or how serious the symptoms may be.
• 46% of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosis of a mental condition at some time in their life
•21% of all U.S. adults live with a mental health condition
•Mental Health conditions affect more females (25.8%) than males (15.8%)
Our society focuses much more on physical health than mental health, but both are equally important. The connection between our physical body and our mental health is important and may be something worth exploring when thinking about staying mentally healthy. If you are concerned about your mental health, there are several options available. You are not alone – help is out there, and recovery is possible. It may be hard to talk about your concerns, but simply acknowledging to yourself that you’re struggling is a really big step.
