Matt Sheppard continued his domination of dirt modified racing Tuesday night when he outran Stewart Friesen down the stretch to pick up a $5,000 win in the 50-lap Short Track Super Series main event at the Outlaw Speedway.
The win for the Savannah driver was his eighth of the 2022 season and the 428th career win for the veteran driver. After Billy Decker led in the early stages of the feature, Sheppard took over the top spot on the 18th circuit.
Midway through the race, Friesen moved into the second position and the two heavy hitters of dirt racing were set to battle for the top prize. Sheppard was running the top groove on the 4/10th-mile Dundee oval while Friesen stuck to the lower groove.
Larry Wight and Mat Williamson both had flat tires while running in the top five. This allowed Friesen to close in on Sheppard’s back bumper. But on each restart, Sheppard pulled away and sped to victory lane and $5,000.
Decker was a solid third, with Brett Haas, Alex Payne, Danny Creeden, Andy Bachetti, Mike Mahaney, Wight and Danny Tyler making up the top 10 finishers. A strong field of 41 STSS modifieds was on hand.
PATRIOT SPRINTS: The Patriot Sprint Tour had a 25-lap main event at Outlaw. Dave Franek moved into first on the eighth lap, and the Pennsylvania driver rolled to a $3,000 victory. Paulie Colagiovanni was second, with Dylan Westbrook, Dalton Rombauch and Jorden Thomas completing the top five finishers. Kreg Crooker got $1,500 for his sportsman win.
SUPER DIRT SERIES: The DIRT big-block modifieds run their first Super DIRT Series event in New York State on Wednesday night at the Can-Am Speedway. The main event for the DIRT mods at this half-mile LaFargeville oval is 75 laps, and a first-place check of $7,500 goes to the winner. Race time is 7 p.m.
WoO: The World of Outlaws Sprint Tour had a Tuesday night date at the Bridgeport (New Jersey) Speedway, and Sheldon Haudenschild came away with the $10,000 win. Kyle Larson wound up second and Donnie Schatz third.
