Don’t allow the GOP to put seniors in financial jeopardy | PennLive letters

Imagine my surprise when I saw that Florida Sen. Rick Scott introduced a plan for the Republican Party that would raise taxes on nearly half of all Americans, forcing seniors and working-class families to pay more when they file their taxes every year.

The GOP Plan also includes provisions that would sunset (end unless reenacted by Congress) after five years Medicare and Social Security, jeopardizing benefits that millions of seniors have spent their entire lives earning.

Social Security and Medicare are so important to me as a retiree. Social Security was a necessity since we retired because we needed to fill the gap in our income. It goes without saying why Medicare is important for all seniors.

When others pointed out how much of a disaster the GOP plan would be for seniors, Sen. Scott doubled down on the GOP plan. The wealthiest member of Congress has the nerve to tell workers and retirees that they’re not paying their fair share.

Other GOP senators have gone so far as to suggest cutting these two essential programs for seniors will help pay for the $1.9 trillion tax cut that they voted for as a handout to wealthy corporations.

The GOP Plan should serve as a warning about what the agenda for Social Security and Medicare could look like if the Republicans retake the Senate in November. No wonder the plan is endorsed by Newt Gingrich, who advocated for Medicare to “wither on the vine” as far back as the 1990s.
