Chenango County now is supplementing volunteer ambulance companies with county-hired Emergency Medical Basic Life Support-trained employees.

The county also has new Advance Life Support fly cars to help cover the north, south and southern zones.

The Chenango Office of Emergency Services officially kicked off the new EMS program May 16 by providing two BLS crews to South Otselic.

Officials had started working pre-pandemic on addressing the issue of trying to get enough volunteers to staff emergency squads in Chenango County.

The county applied for a Certificate of Need with the New York State Department of Health and began the process of ordering equipment and supplies and hiring and training staff.

Emergency Medical Technician training classes are continuing to be scheduled.
