TL;DR
  • Google seems to have started a testing program for the Wear OS companion app on the Play Store.
  • You can now sign-up to test beta versions of the app.
  • However, the request is taking a long time to process.

Google seems to be opening up a preview for its Wear OS app on the Play Store. First noticed by 9to5Google, the Wear OS by Google Smartwatch app on the Play Store now offers a beta sign-up.

Once you head to the sign-up page, you’ll be asked to enter a testing program for the unreleased version of the Wear OS app. However, you won’t immediately get on to the beta after signing up. The request is taking time to process, and like us, you’ll probably see a prompt on the Play Store saying, “Beta sign-up in progress. It takes a few minutes.”

This is the same story with some other Google apps that recently opened up preview programs. Apps like YouTube Music, YouTube TV, Google Clock, and others also started offering beta sign-ups last week, but most people have been stuck on “joining beta” till now.

While the Wear OS beta program seems quite legitimate, it’s unclear when and if Google will release the testing version of the app. 9to5Google also suggests that there could be a larger Play Store bug related to testing.

Nevertheless, the Wear OS app may have an important role to play in the near future with the launch of the Pixel Watch this fall. That is if Google doesn’t release another standalone companion app for the device. For now, the app is running on version 2.57, an update that came in just yesterday after the previous March update.
