The Palo Alto Police Department on Monday said an unidentified woman tried to pull the wedding ring off a woman in her 80s after stopping the elderly woman near downtown on Saturday afternoon.

An unidentified woman drove off with the alleged thief after she failed to take the ring, and police said the elderly woman sustained bruises on two fingers.

The elderly woman said the woman who tried to rob her had a medium complexion and stood 5-foot-4, wearing her black hair in a bun. She said the man had dark hair and a dark mustache.

The pair allegedly stopped the elderly woman to ask for directions to a grocery store at 4:15 p.m. as she walked eastbound along the 700 block of Channing Avenue. After stepping out of what police described as a "large, black" four-door sedan, the unidentified woman allegedly told the elderly woman that she resembled the unidentified woman’s mother.

Police said the unidentified woman offered the elderly woman what she said was a piece of her mother's jewelry, taking the elderly woman's hand off her walker and slipping a bracelet onto her wrist.

The unidentified woman then tried pulling the wedding ring off the elderly woman’s finger, but it stayed on. She then fled alongside the man, and police said he drove away at a "high rate of speed."

The elderly woman wasn’t carrying a cell phone, and she told her family that someone attempted to rob her. A family member then called Palo Alto police just before 8 p.m. last Saturday.

Police are investigating whether Saturday's attempted robbery is connected to an alleged robbery last October about 3 miles away. A woman in her 70s told police at the time that a woman with "darker" skin wearing a scarf and face covering simultaneously slipped a necklace onto her and removed two others before driving away in “an older, silver sedan.”

The woman in her 70s said the other woman, who was in her 50s, didn’t leave the car. As the alleged robbery happened, the male driver spoke with the victim’s husband while a child under the age of 10 years old sat in the backseat.

The Palo Alto Police Department said it is soliciting tips through its 24-hour dispatch center (650-329-2413), while anonymous tips can be emailed (paloalto@tipnow.org) or left as a text message or voice mail (650-383-8984).
