On Tuesday U.S. Marshals arrested a man in Davenport who is wanted for multiple murder charges in Cedar Rapids.
Kazius Childress, 20, is a suspect in two Cedar Rapids homicides from January 2022 and was wanted on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of going armed with intent.
U.S. Marshals transported Childress to the Scott County Jail where he is still in custody.
On Thursday, May 12th, the Cedar Rapids Police Department contacted the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force for assistance in finding Childress.
U.S. Marshals determined Childress was no longer in the Cedar Rapids area and began working with the U.S. Marshal fugitive task force in the Southern District of Iowa.
The investigation led law enforcement to the 7000 block of Hillandale Road in Davenport , where Childress was seen exiting a vehicle and entering a home on Tuesday afternoon.
He was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. by U.S. Marshals with the help of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Davenport Police Department.
Childress is suspected of killing Kavon Johnson, 22, and Cordal Lewis, 19, who were both shot to death within a 24-hour period in Cedar Rapids in late January.
Criminal complaints detail how police identified Childress as their suspect.
Lewis was found lying in the street, dead from gunshot wounds, in the 300 block of 31st Street on January 27. Investigators found Lewis had been just down in the street with other people, including Childress, and the murder weapon was later found at that home. Cedar Rapids police also used video surveillance that verified Childress shot Lewis. The video surveillance showed Lewis running away from the defendant as the defendant shot at him several times.
Security video also linked Childress to Johnson's murder, police say.
Johnson was found shot to death in the parking lot of Cedar Valley Park on Blakely Boulevard SE, less than 24 hours after Lewis's murder.
Investigators were able to use surveillance from a Kum & Go on Mount Vernon Road to determine Johnson had been in a car with Childress within minutes of the shooting. The criminal complaint says another video/audio clip showed the car entering the park and multiple gunshots being fired.
Police say Childress admitted being there when Johnson was shot and he was "recently identified" as the person who killed Johnson.
