Jamie Carragher urges Mo Salah to sign a new Liverpool deal as he warns of past stars who have flopped after leaving the Reds... as Jamie Redknapp insists Virgil van Dijk is the ONLY irreplaceable star at Anfield

  • Mohamed Salah's Liverpool future is uncertain after stalling on a new deal
  • Egyptian has been in stunning form for the Reds this season in quadruple chase
  • But his contract is set to expire next year and he could eventually leave on a free
  • Jamie Redknapp though believes Liverpool would not struggle to replace him
  • Former Reds captain insists Virgil van Dijk is the club's most important player

Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah should sign a new Liverpool contract to benefit his own career, warning of past stars who have failed to shine after leaving Anfield.

Salah's future is up in the air on Merseyside with just one year to run on his current contract despite having starred since his 2017 arrival, scoring 155 goals in 252 games and having just won the Football Writers' Player of the Year.

Barcelona are thought to be keeping tabs on the Egyptian, with the Nou Camp outfit having previously signed Philippe Coutinho for £145million from Liverpool in 2018.

However the Brazilian playmaker failed to settle at the Nou Camp and is now on loan at Aston Villa ahead of a permanent £17m move.

While Carragher did not outright mention the fortunes of his former team-mate, he hinted that Salah may not be better off seeking a move away from Anfield based on past stars' fortunes after leaving.

Fellow forward Sadio Mane is also entering the final 12 months of his current deal - and Carragher insists their full focus should be on the Champions League final against Real Madrid at the end of the month.

Previous key men to have left Anfield such as Philippe Coutinho (above) have struggled to hit the same heights they did while featuring in Jurgen Klopp's side as first team stars

'They have got to focus on creating history in less than a couple of weeks,' Carragher told Sky Sports following Liverpool's 2-1 win at Southampton, which Salah missed due to a slight knock, that kept alive their Premier League title hopes.

'I don’t think it will be at the forefront of their mind. I think Mane will sign, Salah’s future is up in the air and [Roberto] Firmino may see his contract out. He may go for free at the end of next season.

'I think Salah should sign. He [Klopp] has turned good players into great players and Salah is one of them. This suits him, Jurgen Klopp suits him, but I think he should remember about two or three players who left and thought the grass was greener and then look at what they are doing this season.'

However former Reds captain Jamie Redknapp believes that while Salah is a key player in Jurgen Klopp's outfit, he can be replaced by another star forward.

Virgil van Dijk is the most important player at Liverpool, according to Jamie Redknapp

Salah's high wage demands are thought to be the stumbling block that is preventing him from committing to an extended stay at Liverpool, but Redknapp insists no player should be earning more than defender Virgil van Dijk, who he believes is the only player that is irreplaceable at the club.

'The players have the power. One thing I learned from being at this club is that they will reward you and look after you when you are doing well,' Redknapp added.

'But sometimes if we give him a big money… wouldn’t give anyone more money than Virgil van Dijk. He should be on the most. They will find another Mo Salah but you won’t find another Van Dijk. There will always be another great striker who comes to this club.'
