Three teens are being treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after a fight at Martin Luther King Junior Park, police said.

Des Moines Police Department spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek said in an email that investigators believe a "large fight" took place Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot at the park, which is at the corner of Garfield Avenue and East 17th Street. One person involved pulled out a gun and began shooting, and a member of the other group returned fire, Parizek said.

The shooting was reported to police at 2:32 p.m., according to Parizek.

The three injured teens are being treated at local hospitals, Parizek said. No arrests were immediately made, but officials don't believe there's an ongoing threat to the public, police said.

"Our community’s parks are safe; people who bring guns and violence to them are not, and we’re focused on finding them right now," Parizek said.
