With recent summer-like temperatures, we have to consider what issues will come as the weather becomes warmer.
As the weather continues to warm and showers continue in our area, mosquitoes will become more common in our lives.
"The more rain we get, the more standing water we have, the more opportunities for those mosquitoes to breed and develop, and then the warmer the weather is, the faster that life cycle happens which kind of presents control challenges for us," explained Paul Bauman, biologist and general manager of the Toledo Area Sanitary District.
The Sanitary District uses mosquito management techniques to prevent and control mosquito populations in Lucas County.
"We are looking at standing water that is sitting around and that basically has young immature larval mosquitoes developing in it. So we check those water sources that are throughout the county. If they have mosquitoes in them and it has reached kind of that threshold, then we will treat that."
The start date of mosquito season is widely variable depending on what is happening, but normally the start is late May or early June, but there are ways to prepare for the season.
"Wear your repellents, long sleeves if you can tolerate it, long pants, avoiding the prime biting times which are usually dusk and dawn. ... To eliminate them around your home, you are going to want to look for any containers around that are holding water. So, you know, bird baths, tires, play toys, wheelbarrows, anything like that, that's sitting out. And make sure you're dumping that water."
Mosquitoes are a concern until the first hard frost toward the end of the year for the season, stay protected through the season.
