KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek man is on his way to prison for driving drunk and killing another man.
Jose Cavazos was sentenced to 29 months to 15 years on Monday, May 16, in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court after he pleaded guilty on March 28 to operating while intoxicated causing death.
Cavazos was charged in the July 18th, 2021 death of 32-year-old Brady Rowse, also of Battle Creek, when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of East Michigan Avenue and Mercury Drive in Charleston Township, hitting Rowse’s car and killing him.
According to police, Rowse also had two of his children in the car at the time of the crash, which caused the car to roll over and cause injuries to the two minors.
Court records say that Cavazos had a blood alcohol content of 0.192, more than two times the legal limit of 0.08 about two hours following the crash.
Cavazos also was ordered to pay over $11,000 in restitution to Rowe’s mother for funeral costs and lost wages.
