It's time to meet a new Companion, or perhaps an old one? Doctor Who has just announced that Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney is joining the franchise as what could be a new version of Rose, who was first played by Billie Piper!
According to Deadline, Yasmin Finney has been cast as Rose in Doctor Who. Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies teased the character's return, asking “How can there be another Rose?” This was a reference to Billie Piper's character, who was the Time Lord's Companion from 2005 to 2009.
For now, it's unclear if Finney is truly playing a new version of Rose or if her character is a completely new Companion who just happens to share the name. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
Yasmin Finney expressed her excitement about being a part of Doctor Who.
“If anyone would have told eight-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” Finney said in a statement. “This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life.”
Finney made her mark for her performance in Heartstopper where she played Elle Argent. She is set to be one of the first transgender actors to appear in Doctor Who. With that in mind, we can't wait to see Finney in the series soon.
The casting comes right after it was confirmed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble for Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary special. It is best to remember that Rose was one of the first Companions for Tennant's Doctor and their parting was one of the most heartbreaking moments in the show's history.
