Jackson County officials got to celebrate some progress Monday on a multi-million dollar facility. Community leaders gathered in Maquoketa to break ground on a new law enforcement center. The $7-and-a-half million dollar project is estimated to take about 18 months to finish. Once complete, the center will house a jail and space for the sheriff’s department. The new 32-bed jail will nearly triple the county’s current capacity. The Jackson County Jail has been cited before by the Iowa Department of Corrections for having safety risks. Authorities said the facility could be shut down by the state if issues weren’t addressed.Â
