Many people in the Buffalo neighborhood around the Tops grocery store walk up and down the street - not because they want to, but because it's their main form of transportation.
And with the store being closed for three days now since it's part of an active investigation after a man is accused of fatally shooting 10 people Saturday, some people are having difficult accessing food.
Durhilda Brown lives just a few houses away from that Tops.
"It makes it a food desert," Brown said. "I mean, they had to fight very hard to get this Tops here."
Brown said she sees people walking down the street daily with their metal carts heading to get groceries, but it's now a more difficult trip.
"It’s going to be very difficult for people, especially for people who don’t have transportation. Without transportation, they’re just out of luck," she said.
Morgan Eaton just moved into the neighborhood two years ago. He’s worried about how the elderly in the area will get their groceries.
Even for him, he said he doesn't think he’ll be able to go into that grocery again after seeing what happened.
"It’s going to be really hard because the security guard, who I spoke to many times in and out of Tops [was killed]," said Eaton. "So, it’s going to be hard going in and out of that place."
Hispanolia Bryant said he lives up the street from the Tops and rides his scooter every other day to the grocery store not just to shop, but to visit.
"I usually come down to Tops and sit around and see everybody and everybody that comes through there, a lot of people, you know, and I just sit there and have fun, and I just in front of Tops sometimes," Bryant said.
Brown agrees. She said the store wasn't just a place to get groceries, but a place for old friends to catch up.
"That Tops there was like a meeting place," said Brown. "I’ve gone there and run into classmates that I’ve known since kindergarten and first grade."
Durhilda. Morgan, and Hispanolia all said the same thing: they need time to heal and for the community to come together to lean on one another.
