'Mass casualty' accident on Fairfield highway, emergency crews say

The Fairfield fire department declared a mass casualty incident following a "major vehicle accident" that injured six people, including at least one who was trapped for a time Tuesday.

Six vehicles were involved in the crash on eastbound Highway 12 and Chadbourne Road around 11:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Fire officials said six people were injured. None of the injuries were described as life-threatening, but the condition of the injured people is not known. One person was trapped inside their vehicle and had to be extricated. 

Aerial footage showed multiple cars askew on the highway with one car up on an embankment. Authorities have not said what caused the collision. 

At about 2:15 p.m., the Highway Patrol said that the crash had been cleared and that all lanes were reopened.  

A mass casualty event is one that overwhelms the local emergency care system in a short period of time. 

Fairfield is a city within Solano County about 50 miles from San Francisco.
