The Indianapolis Colts possess perhaps the NFL's best running back in Jonathan Taylor, who led the league in both rushing yards and touchdowns in a career year. Despite that, the Colts went out in the offseason and added this veteran running back as depth behind Taylor. Former NFL Scouting director Mike McCartney has the latest.

Per McCartney, who offered his congratulations in a tweet, Phillip Lindsay has signed a one-year contract with the Colts. Lindsay, who has two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt in the NFL, will provide some key depth behind Taylor, who already has 564 carries on his legs in just two seasons.

While some fans will see this as an excuse for Colts head coach Frank Reich to utilize Lindsay and fellow backup Nyheim Hines more, it's a wise plan if the Colts are attempting to keep Taylor fresh.

It's a strategy, whether intentional or not, that seemed to work very well for the Colts last year. Through the first nine games of the season, Taylor had yet to eclipse the 20-carry mark. Through the final eight contests, the Colts star hit that mark six times and tallied over 100 rushing yards in six of those games.

He was clearly at his best at the end of the year, thanks in part to the depth behind him. After the Phillip Lindsay signing, that depth just got even stronger.
