Former Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre could be set to make a return to the Bundesliga, with reports claiming that he is the favourite to take over at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Adi Hütter at the end of the season. According to multiple reports in Germany, the current favourite for the job is former Borussia Dortmund trainer Lucien Favre and initial talks have already taken place between the two parties.

The 64 year old has not taken on a new job since being sacked by Borussia Dortmund in December 2020. He was heavily linked with a move to English Premier League side Crystal Palace last year. However, he turned down the job in order to spend some more time away from the game. But Gladbach could present him with the perfect opportunity to make his return to coaching.

If the deal goes through, Favre would be making a stunning return to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Swiss tactician previously spent four years in charge of the Foals between 2011 and 2015. Gladbach were struggling at the foot of the table when he first took over as head coach. But he surpassed all expectations and helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are coming off a disappointing season that saw them finish tenth in the Bundesliga standings. Gladbach could only manage 12 wins in the Bundesliga, and Adi Hütter paid the price for his team’s poor performances.

In addition to Favre, Gladbach are also said to be considering Daniel Farke, André Breitenreiter and Hannes Wolf in their search for a new head coach.
