Johnny Cueto is back.
After several injury-plagued seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Cueto got another shot with the Chicago White Sox, which was made possible when Lance Lynn, the staff ace, went down with a torn meniscus before the start of the season.
But Cueto made his return last night against the Kansas City Royals, the team he won a World Series ring with.
He pitched six scoreless innings against his old team, holding them to just two hits while walking just two and striking out seven on 81 pitches.
A White Sox fan page on Twitter tweeted about Cueto’s night, referring to his dominance as a “masterclass.”
Go, Johnny Go!
Cueto looked just like his old self last night, the guy who was the ace of the Cincinnati Reds for several years and the guy who went the distance against the New York Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series.
This is what the White Sox were looking for when they signed him.
They were looking for somebody who could plug a hole if somebody got hurt.
They’ve been without Lynn and Lucas Giolito for some time and needed a boost.
Cueto was there to give them just that on Monday night, dominating his former squad and leading the White Sox to win No. 17 on the year, propelling them back to the .500 mark.
This is the type of pitcher Cueto has been for the vast majority of his career.
He’s a guy that knows how to go out there and dominate every chance he gets.
If he can keep pitching like this, the returns of Lynn and Giolito will be even bigger boosts down the road.
