“I’m not gonna say it’s the most ominous sign, but that is not what you wanted to read today.”

With there still being no timetable for deGrom to begin throwing off a mound, Tierney says an optimistic view would bring the Mets ace back after the All-Star break, a year after he was shut down for the rest of the 2021 season, but there also exists an outcome where deGrom doesn’t pitch at all in 2022.

“At this point, you gotta say post All-Star Game is the loose target,” Tierney said.

“You might have to prepare for no deGrom this year.”

Even if deGrom does return in 2022, Tierney says the question about the ace’s future with the team needs to be raised.

“Let’s say he comes back in mid-August…and he has maybe two starts, and there’s an interruption and he comes back,” Tierney said. “How do you deal with the free agency?”
