Court docs: Husband discovered school choir director wife's inappropriate relationship with student
A Lawrence County school choir director is facing sex assault and unlawful contact with a minor charges, police in New Wilmington announced Tuesday.
Olivia Ortz, 26, was employed as the director of choirs at Wilmington Area High School. Court documents allege that in April, Ortz's husband discovered messages on Ortz's iPad. Ortz told her husband the messages were between her and a female student.
Ortz's husband, who had been contracted for past stage productions at the school, went to the school principal and the two reported the incident to Childline.
The police investigation included multiple interviews with the student who, New Wilmington police said, said she was involved with Ortz. Police said the 17-year-old told them she considered Ortz to be a "safe adult" whom she trusted and confided in. The two allegedly communicated both inside and outside the school, according to police.
"In my personal and professional opinion, that's one of the biggest violations in this case, is that you stole that student's trust. And once you take her trust, you can take everything else from her," Chief Carmen Piccirillo, New Wilmington police, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4.
"It's a tragedy for everyone," Piccirillo said. "It's a tragedy for the student and her family. It's a tragedy for the teacher's husband and his family. It's a tragedy for the teacher. She's a talented young woman just getting started in her career. And from what we've seen, she's made a number of horribly bad decisions."
The criminal complaint alleges Ortz invited the victim to her home while her husband was away on a trip. The student told police the two "snuggled," watched TV and eventually went into the bedroom where they engaged in sexual activity. The student told police she went back to the home several times to "comfort" Ortz after Ortz's husband discovered the relationship.
Authorities seized Ortz's cell phone as well as her iPad during a search of her home earlier this month. Police said Ortz was made aware of the police investigation and the potential charges. But officials allege Ortz continued to communicate with the student.
Using the Spotify app, police allege Ortz and the student exchanged over 100 messages until the student's father discovered the conversation and took away her access to technology.
Ortz surrendered to police on May 16. She waived her preliminary hearing on May 31 and is expected to be formally arraigned on July 6.
Ortz is not the first director of choirs at Wilmington Area School District to face charges. The teacher who held the post before her faces his own charges of institutional sexual assault.
"Olivia Ortz did replace him and she's only been there about a year. Unfortunately, very ironic," Piccirillo said.
The superintendent wouldn't comment, but the district website posted this statement:
"The Wilmington Area School District recently received information concerning an alleged inappropriate relationship between a district high school teacher and student. Upon learning of this situation, the District immediately suspended the teacher, who has since resigned. Additionally, the District reported the allegations to ChildLine, local law enforcement, and PA Department of Education."
"An investigation ensued under the supervision of the New Wilmington Borough Police with the assistance of the Lawrence County District Attorney's Office. Today we have learned that criminal charges were filed and the former teacher was taken into custody this afternoon."
